About
The HerMana Anthology amplifies intersectional writing by BIWOC (cis, trans, non-binary) writers through poetry and prose which “dismanTELL” the constraints of dominant culture to reimagine the way(s) toward a shared future. The collection draws on the work of contributors across the spectrum of race, gender, sexuality, and ability.
Compensating BIWOC artists is an integral aspect of this project; that is, rightfully valuing each person’s art and facilitating an equitable exchange of resources. Thanks to generous funding from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, we are now able to open up submissions and if selected, provide contributors with an honorarium of $25-$75 depending on the number of pieces chosen for publication.
Background
HerMana began as a podcast in 2018 (the name a play on the word’s Spanish and Hawaiian translations, hermana as "sister" and mana as "spiritual power," drawing from co-hosts Regina Felice Garcia’s and Charity E. Yoro’s respective backgrounds).
The anthology project was started last year (2020) as a means to document and contextualize where we find ourselves today – amid a global pandemic, climate change events, a growing collective consciousness of social injustice – and despite of (or due to) these disruptions, to elevate and re-center the voices most essential to leading the path forward.
